How Wood Shrinks and Swells

نویسنده

چکیده

Shrinking and swelling play important roles in the utilization and seasoning of wood. The mechanics of shrinking and swelling and the influence of wood structure are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the variability of shrinking and swelling, and the chief reasons for variability. The effects of shrinking and swelling on wood during seasoning and in use are discussed, along with methods of minimiz ing these effects.

Challenges in Biomass–Thermoplastic Composites

Wood and other biomass resources have been blended with thermoplastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polylactic acid and polyvinyl chloride to form wood plastic composites (WPC). WPCs have seen a large growth in the United States in recent years mainly in the residential decking market with the removal of CCA treated wood decking from residential markets. While there are many successes to...

Strong dissipation of steep swells observed across oceans

Global observations of ocean swell propagation is presented and analyzed, using on four years of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar data. Tracking swells along their propagation paths yields an estimation of the dissipation of their energy. Swells can be very persistent with energy e-folding scales exceeding 30,000 km. For increasing swell steepness, this scale shrinks down to 2700 km, revealin...

Observation of swell dissipation across oceans

Global observations of ocean swell, from satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar data, are used to estimate the dissipation of swell energy for a number of storms. Swells can be very persistent with energy e-folding scales exceeding 20,000 km. For increasing swell steepness this scale shrinks systematically, down to 2800 km for the steepest observed swells, revealing a significant loss of swell ener...

Oscillatory dynamics induced in polyelectrolyte gels by a non-oscillatory reaction: a model.

We develop a general model and the associated numerical algorithm to compute the swelling dynamics of chemo-responsive polyelectrolyte gels immersed in a reactive ionic solution kept at a non equilibrium stationary state by a permanent feed of fresh reactants. Using an autocatalytic bistable but nonoscillatory reaction, namely, the bromate-sulfite reaction, we predict that a piece of hydrogel t...

“Wood Already Touched by Fire is not Hard to Set Alight”; Comment on “Constraints to Applying Systems Thinking Concepts in Health Systems: A Regional Perspective from Surveying Stakeholders in Eastern Mediterranean Countries”

A major constraint to the application of any form of knowledge and principles is the awareness, understanding and acceptance of the knowledge and principles. Systems Thinking (ST) is a way of understanding and thinking about the nature of  health systems and how to make and implement decisions within health systems to maximize desired and minimize undesired effects. A major constraint to applyi...
